Our Story Sea View Cottage to let

Sea View Cottage is part of what was originally built as a stone merchant’s house in Fortuneswell on Portland. It was constructed in 1805 however much of its history is unknown. Later the original house was divided in two and Sea View Cottage is the Southern-most of these two properties. More recently, its previous owners extended and upgraded the cottage. We carried out further improvements in 2018/19 thereby creating the first of our holiday cottages to let. And we’ve recently added a stunning, sea-facing, timber sun deck and viewing platform. We value our guest’s comfort – check out our reviews where guests say how cozy they feel here. However, guests should note that there are cottage style stairs (steeper than normal) between all floors. There are also external steps down to a front yard. Plus a few steps at the rear of the cottage to reach the sun deck.

The external walls of the cottage are constructed of 600mm (2 feet) thick Portland stone. Window seats are built into the walls below most of the windows. One of these is used as a mini-Tourist Information Centre.

The upper floors have that great ‘seaside look’ of white painted boarded floors with rugs. The second floor is very interesting because one of the purlins has obviously seen previous service as a ship’s mast. Similarly, the floor boading at this level is very old. It’s possible both were reclaimed in the early 1800’s from ships that foundered on nearby rocks.

Our Story More about Sea View Cottage to let

Sea View Cottage has gardens front and rear. The front garden is fully enclosed with steps down to a small yard which contains a bicycle shelter.

The rear garden boasts a sea-facing, sun deck and viewing platform that gets the sun most of the day. The decked area is both child and dog secure. The rear garden can be enjoyed from the safety of the decking. However it’s fenced off for guest’s safety because it’s steep and undulating and has an unfenced boundary to one side above a retaining wall.

Sea View Cottage welcomes up to two, well behaved dogs, although not on the furniture please (see our doggy page). The rear sun deck and viewing platform is dog secure, however the front garden is only semi-dog secure. We don’t charge extra for dogs.

An independant fire risk assessment was carried out in 2018 after which fire doors were installed and the electrical installation upgraded. The cottage was then re-assessed and a Certificate issued in March 2019 valid to March 2024.
