Flaming June 2023
Sea View’s cottage garden really does look at its best in June. The photos below were taken on two separate visits during the first two weeks of June 2023. The weather was absolutely glorious, virtually sizzling and with lots of insect and bee activity. Wonderful!
We do very little to the gardens from year to year. We just clear away the dead poppies and other vegetation, ensuring they have dropped their seed first. The Echiums (the12+ foot tall plants with the light blue flowers) are down in number this year. A lot of them didn’t survive Storm Eunice in February 2022. However we’re hopeful new ones will grow this year and flower next year or (and more likely) in 2025. It’s a far cry from 2021. That year we visited the Ventnor Botanic Gardens on the Isle of Wight to find that they had less Echiums on display than we did!
There’s a small potted herb garden close to the locked gate down to the rear cottage garden. If you come to stay, please do us a favour by filling the watering can and watering them. And by all means reward yourself by picking and using the herbs.
Note that the gate from the rear decking to the rear garden is kept locked because it’s very steep. Also the ground is undulating, plus there’s an unfenced retaining wall on the South side. But please do enjoy the rear garden – but from the safety of the decking and observation platform above it.
